I attended the Chgo Golden Gloves last Saturday and saw Kelly Pavlik, middleweight champion, in the flesh. He's very tall and skinny. I expected him to be more muscular. =/

I have become a fan of Gerry Penalosa after watching this weekend's super featherweight bout (held in Puerto Rico) between he and Juan Manuel 'Juanma' Lopez. Both boxers have outstanding records, Penalosa's 54-7-2, 36 KOs and Lopez 25-0, 23 KOs.

Juanma's strength and punch output of 1020 was too much for Penalosa. Penalosa's trainer, Freddie Roach, halted the fight in the 9th round giving Juanma his 23rd (technical) KO.

I have much respect and admiration for Penalosa. His experience in the ring was telling. He's a veteran of the sport and a skilled technician. Even with Juanma's heavy hands, Penalosa never hit the canvas...I repeat, NEVER hit the canvas. Penalosa showed that he had a strong chin and could absorb multiple shots. Penalosa was able to break Juanma's 1st round KO streak (Juanma had originally predicted that Penalosa would be his fourth consecutive 1st round KO). Penalosa was also able to take Juanma deep into the latter rounds, not too many boxers have been able to do this against Juanma. The simple fact that the crowd cheered for Penalosa after the fight said it all.

Now I can actually say that I have a favorite Pinoy boxer and his name is not Pacman.

My predictions for the upcoming HBO matches:

-Babybull Diaz wins by unanimous decision over Malignaggi (by working close to the body which will tire Malignaggi, preventing him from working his jabs)

-JM Marquez wins by unanimous decision over Mayweather (Marquez will be the 'busier' of the two in punch out-put, Mayweather will pay the price for ring-rust and his defense)

-V Klitschko will win by KO over Arreola (Arreola will lack the stamina to go all rounds against Klitschko)

-While Manny has the speed (it's known in the boxing world that 'speed kills'), Cotto is a hard-hitter and works the body very well. Either Manny will be too quick for Cotto and will have an impressive punch out-put or Cotto will negate his speed by over-powering him with the body punches. I'm sure that Cotto's re-hydrated weight on fight night will be more compared to Manny, which I believe is another factor to consider.

-The rematch between Bute and Andrade has been highly anticipated considering the controversial decision win by Bute during their first match! Andrade will win by a definitive KO, taking Bute deep into the later rounds.

Juan 'Babybull' Diaz won by unanimous 'home-town' decision over Paulie Malignaggi. Two of the three judges' score-cards obviously favored Diaz. Even the unofficial Lederman score-card seemed more accurate and fair.

This fight was disappointing on several levels. Aside from the home-town decision, the manner in which Malignaggi handled himself during the post-fight interview was unprofessional and exhibited poor sportsmanship.

To my surprise, Malignaggi did well against Diaz. Malignaggi worked his jabs and his foot-work was fast. Diaz worked good combinations, but didnt seem to perform as well. I even think Diaz boxed better during his fight against JM Marquez.

Still love ya Paulie! Good luck in law school, Juan!

Last Saturday...

Mayweather vs JM Marquez with no title on the line,
at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas

Unanimous decision win for Mayweather after 18 months in retirement over Marquez!

While some people would love to hate Mayweather, it's hard to deny that he's naturally talented and gifted in the sport of boxing. He has speed, power and instinct.

I'm still hoping for Pacquiao vs Mayweather. At this point, there are no other boxers talented enough to face either boxer except for each other! It will be Pacquiao vs Cotto in November, 2009. I would imagine it will be Mayweather vs Mosley next (considering the Marquez post-fight interview). After the formalities, then maybe (?) Pacquiao vs Mayweather. Finally!

i'm just wondering why mayweather never fought mosley when the latter was at his prime... mayweather was too big for marquez during the fight, if only he shed those extra pounds, it would have been a better fight........ i think

^^^Lanzki-ski-ski! I miss posting with you. How's life down under?

In my opinion, Mosley poses a threat to Mayweather. Although Mosley is older, he's still a good technician (speed and power). Did you see the fight against Margarito, when Mosley broke Margarito down, peeled him layer by layer?

It was Mayweather's intention to NOT make weight against JM Marquez. The extra two pounds was to Mayweather's advantage. The contract was re-written the week of the fight, which penalized Mayweather $300,000.00 for every pound he went over. This meant that Marquez was paid $600,000.00 even before the bell rang.

Diaz vs Malignaggi II is taking place at UIC Pavilion in Chi-cah-go on 12.12.09. I'm debating between watching live ringside (tix start at $250.00 front-row) versus watching on cable (airs free). Although I'm a fan of both boxers, I should watch the fight on cable, put the $600.00 towards tix in Vegas for another bout, right?
